What is a sleep test (polysomnography)?
What is a sleep test (polysomnography)?
Sleep test (polysomnography) is a helpful test performed in sleep laboratories to detect factors that prevent the patient from getting quality sleep and to confirm the diagnosis. In this sleep test, the person
Oral and nasal airflow abnormalities
Blood pressure and ECG (Heart electrocardiogram) chart
Oxygen level in blood
Movements of brain waves
Eye and respiratory movements
Movements in the muscles and especially in the legs
Sleeping positions of the body
are monitored and recorded. All these results are examined by a neurologist and the problem that reduces sleep quality is detected.
Why is it done?
It is used in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep disorder (OSAS) seen in middle-aged and overweight male patients. Symptoms of obstructive sleeping disease,
loud snoring
Inability to breathe at night
blockage in breathing
It disturbs the patient during sleep. Continuous insomnia, especially during the daytime, may be a sign of OSAS. Sleep testing is also used to diagnose narcolepsy and cataplexy.
When You Come to Our Sleep Laboratory;
Polysomnography is performed in our sleep laboratory at our hospital. Data is recorded throughout the night’s sleep. Our neurologist, who is an expert in sleep disorders, examines the results. It is essential that sleep tests be performed in a hospital environment. It is mandatory to have a specialist physician who can provide medical intervention in an unusual situation.
What if I can’t sleep?
The fact that our patients have many sensors on them during the sleep test may cause them to think that they will not be able to sleep in the first minutes. However, this is a very rare situation. During the polysomnography test, people may not fall asleep immediately like at home, but they will fall asleep at night within a few minutes. If a truly unusual situation occurs and the patient cannot sleep, a sleep medicine that will put the patient to sleep can be prescribed by the specialist physician.
